PT 107 Child-Centered Group Play Therapy
CCGPT is based on the belief that children have an innate tendency to express themselves and work through their issues through play. The therapist's role is to create a safe and accepting environment for the child to do so. The group dynamic is an essential aspect of the therapy. Children in the group can interact with one another, providing opportunities for social learning and peer support. The therapist facilitates these interactions and helps children navigate their relationships within the group.
In CCGPT, the therapist is more like a facilitator than a director. The therapist creates an environment where children feel safe to explore and express themselves, encouraging self-discovery and growth.
The course is designed to train students to lead child-centered group play therapy. There are special considerations to be covered in class, such as the role of the therapist, group dynamics and composition, sibling/non-sibling group play therapy, concurrent individual/group play therapy, open/closed group, and stages of group process. Students will gain an understanding of the theoretical foundations, skills, and ethical considerations in working with children through play in a group context.
