PT 208 Different Approaches in Play Thearpy

This course provides an overview of play therapy as a therapeutic intervention for children and adolescents. Students will explore various theoretical approaches, learn practical techniques, and develop skills necessary for effective practice in play therapy settings.

Course Objectives:

  1. Learn about different approaches such as Bibliotherapy and techniques used in play therapy.

  2. Develop skills in conducting play therapy sessions and assessing client progress.

  3. Explore ethical considerations and cultural sensitivity in play therapy practice.

  4. Gain insight into the application of play therapy across various client populations and settings.

Bibliotherapy Using Picture Books:

  • Exploring the therapeutic potential of picture books in addressing emotional and behavioral issues

  • Selecting appropriate picture books based on clients' needs, age, and developmental stage

  • Facilitating discussion and exploration of themes and characters in picture books to promote insight and emotional processing.

  • Hands-on activities and demonstrations showcasing the use of picture books in play therapy sessions

Directive Approach in group practice:

  • Understanding the dynamics of group play therapy sessions

  • Developing structured activities to facilitate group interaction and expression

  • Addressing individual needs within the group context while maintaining group cohesion

  • Utilizing techniques to facilitate therapeutic progress.

 

Directive Approach with older children:

  • Exploration of directive play therapy techniques

  • Integrating child-centered play therapy theory with structured activities

  • Case examples and demonstrations showcasing the application of directive techniques with older children

Instructors: 

Mr. Lau Ping Hei (RSW, RPT-S™)

Mr. Lau Ping Hei is an experienced registered social worker and play therapist. He has been a supervisor of a school-based social worker team for a number of years. His training and expertise make him a very unique professional in the social service sector.  Mr. Lau is also a part-time lecturer at the university, imparting his professional insights to aspiring learners. Mr. Lau has two beautiful daughters. His fatherhood has enriched his experience in parent education class. Mr. Lau’s interest lies in brewing coffee, a delightful hobby that contributes to maintaining a balanced work-life style.

Ms. Wing Leung (RCC, RPT-S)

Wing Leung is a registered clinical counsellor and play therapy supervisor with over five years of counselling experience and a decade of teaching. She was a lecturer in colleges and has taught at various levels, including secondary and primary schools, kindergartens, and special childcare centers. With a strong background in early childhood education, she deeply understands the diverse needs of child development, including those of children with special needs and gifted children. Wing is dedicated to offering comprehensive professional guidance to parents, believing in the unique potential of each individual. Her sincere commitment aims to bring hope and support to people in need.

Remarks: 

 

  • Play therapy credit may be awarded to graduate students enrolled in a graduate mental health program or individuals who hold a graduate mental health degree in counselling, marriage and family therapy, psychiatry, psychology, or social work.
