Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (Training Manual)

Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT) was developed by Dr. Garry L. Landreth, a renowned expert in the field of play therapy. CPRT is grounded in attachment theory, recognizing the critical importance of secure attachments between children and their caregivers in healthy emotional and psychological development.  CPRT focuses on strengthening the bond and attachment between parents (or caregivers) and their children. It is child-centered, emphasizing the child's need for emotional expression, autonomy, and the importance of the parent's role in facilitating this process.

A key component of CPRT is teaching parents to become therapeutic agents in their child's life by conducting special play sessions at home under the guidance of a trained therapist.

The course is designed to train students to lead a child-parent relationship training class, which Dr. Garry Landreth designed. The course will cover important issues such as pre-group screening, myths in parenting, limit setting skills, toy selection, special play time arrangement, parent’s personal struggles, and play therapy skills. The training includes both theoretical knowledge about play therapy and CPRT principles, as well as practical skills for implementing CPRT techniques in therapy sessions with parents and children.

Objectives:

  1. The course aims to help students learn to practice CPRT to improve parent-child relationships, enhance communication, and address behavioral and emotional challenges within the family.

  2. The course will discuss the importance of cultural sensitivity and adaptability in CPRT, considering diverse family backgrounds and experiences.

  3. The course will focus on understanding and addressing the child's emotional needs, behaviors, and responses within the therapeutic context, promoting self-expression and emotional intelligence.

  4. The students will learn to help parents actively in the special playtime process at home and assign homework exercises to reinforce therapeutic gains within the home environment.

  5. The course will cover a wide range of play therapy techniques and interventions to enhance communication and connection between parents and children.
